Women’s stockings are sexy because of their sensuous feel. The smooth silkiness of the fabric invites being touched and investigated. It simply feels good to the human touch. Both for the person doing the touching and for the wearer of the stockings and if you are observant you will often see a woman rubbing her stockinged leg simply because she herself enjoys the feel of the fabric under her hand.
When women wore silk stockings this fabric felt better because it was a natural smoother fabric and a different weave. But those stockings were not nearly as comfortable to wear as the stockings of today that are made from a fabric called spandex and the elasticity or stretch in this fabric is much more comfortable to wear. It moves with a body instead of confining it.
Spandex is a man-made fabric and technology has improved the life and durability of the fabric. Today you can treat stockings without as much care as you had to exercise with the silk stockings. Silk stockings were exceptionally easy to ladder and the ladders used to ‘run’
A ladder in a stocking is where a thread gets pulled and starts to unravel the garment. This would usually travel down the leg and eventually unravel other threads along the way eventually ending up in a great big hole in the stocking so that anyone wearing a pair of stockings with a ladder would look pretty dishevelled and unkempt. It was considered (and still is today) socially unacceptable for a woman to be seen in a pair of laddered stockings. Laddered stockings are definitely not sexy or inviting to the touch.
Spandex stockings on the other hand are much more ‘forgiving’ and don’t run like laddered stockings of yesteryear. Today if you snag your stockinged leg on a desk drawer and pull a thread it tends to go straight into a hole first. It doesn’t make the adjoining threads unravel like it would have in silk or nylon stockings. This small hole can be much more easily managed in an office or social environment.
On the ‘downside’ of spandex fabric for women’s stockings though is the loss of the pure silky feel. Silk and nylon were much finer fabrics and felt sexier to the human touch.
